Located in the east of
Antalya, Perge is certainly one of the major archaeological sights of
Turkey. Although people of Perge believed that their city had been
established by the heroes of Trojan war, visitors enjoy the Hellenistic
and Roman ruins of the city. Saint Paul visited Perge during his first
missionary trip. Paul, Barnabas and John Mark came to Perge after their
time in Cyprus. After arriving to Antalya harbour, they came to Perge
either by boat or by Roman road of ancient times. Paul and his friends
did not stay in Perge long time. Paul got ill there. It is suggested that
he got malaria decease and he wanted to go away from the marshy grounds
of the south. Also young member of the group, John Mark left the group.
He was either feeling homesick or he was disturbed by the Paul's
leadership.
